Alameda County Health

Visual Identity & Website

Alameda County Health is the local government agency responsible for protecting and promoting the health of everyone who lives, works, learns, and plays in Alameda County. The agency needed a rebrand that could unify three separate departments and over 50 individual programs into one recognizable organization, both on paper and online. I worked on the visual identity alongside another designer on our team, then led the web design that carried that identity into a functioning digital experience.


Before the redesign, Alameda County Health's identity and web presence were fragmented across three departments, each with its own naming conventions and visual language, and more than 50 individual programs competing for space and attention, leaving residents with no reliable way to find help. Working under my Creative Director, I contributed to the identity system in tandem with another designer on our team, helping develop the visual language that ties the three departments together while preserving each one's distinct identity. From there, I moved into leading the website portion of the project, consolidating all three departments and 50+ programs into a single, unified web design system.

Approach

The identity gives each department its own principal color while sharing a common icon language, typography, and tone across the agency. I carried that same logic into the web design. Department landing pages needed to be immediately identifiable as Behavioral Health, Environmental Health, or Public Health, while still reading unmistakably as part of Alameda County Health as a whole.

Design System

For the build, I used the U.S. Web Design System (USWDS), the federal government's open source design system, as the foundation. USWDS gave the project a component library and accessibility standards already built for public sector sites, which let me focus on adapting the system to the agency's new identity and information architecture rather than building UI patterns from scratch. To manage the volume of programs, I built a flexible template structure rather than individual page designs, so program pages would be easy for county staff to populate and maintain, easy for residents to scan and find what they needed, and consistent enough that a visitor could move between departments without feeling like they had left the site.

RESULTS

The result is a web design system that gives Alameda County Health's digital presence the same clarity and cohesion as its new brand identity. Residents can move between departments and programs without losing their sense of place, and the county has a scalable, USWDS-based template structure to grow into as new programs are added.
